Today was the first day of my new life as a fashionista: at least, that’s what I reminded myself as I dragged myself to the shower this morning. Thankfully, we were starting slow. One of my former students challenged me to wear pink on Wednesday, in the spirit of Mean Girls. This should be easy, I thought as I wiped my face and made my way back to my bedroom.
Famous last words.
Despite my digging, I quickly found that I do not own very many things in that color! I had eight white tees, twelve black tees…and nothing in pink. It was a relief when I finally found a pair of pink chinos that I had bought during a shelter-in-place shopping spree two years ago. I wondered why I hadn’t ever worn these pants: maybe it was because they were hidden, along with many other pairs of work pants, in the bottom of my dresser. Or maybe it was my lingering insecurity around my looks, the same thing that has prevented me from doing this challenge to begin with.
In any case, I had no choice. I threw on an old Twice t-shirt (gifted by a former student), a jean jacket, a beanie, and some white sneakers to finish off today’s look.

I’m surprised at how different I felt throughout the afternoon – although it was a work-from-home day, taking off my pajamas and putting on actual clothes made me feel more like an actual professional. More than the outfit, it was just the intention of choosing an outfit to fit my mood that sharpened my focus and helped me prepare myself for the long to-do list I needed to catch up. I was reluctant at first to sacrifice the comfort of sweatpants, but ultimately I’m glad I talked myself into doing it.
I also got a compliment from a very sweet mom during my afternoon walk, which felt great. I did not feel brave enough to ask anybody to take a picture of me, though. Maybe that’s a goal for tomorrow?
I’m feeling good about this month, though. Bring on day 2!
